I was Sick but now I’m Better: From the Diary of Corbin S.R. Roome

Tuesday, May 29
Deb sent me home from daycare with a fever today. Tonight, Mom and Dad were super nice to me. When I went to bed, Mom said that I talked nonsense in my sleep. She said I talked about Daddy losing his hat.

Wednesday, May 30
This morning I feel a tiny bit better, but I am still sick. “Mommy, you go to work, Ok? I don’t go to Deb’s, Ok? I go to Granny’s House, Ok?” So, Dad drove me up to Granny’s house.

Thursday, May 31
Mom and Dad got a call from Deb today. My good friend Maleea has been very sick. She had a temperature of 104 and the doctor gave her antibiotics for an infection. So, this evening at 5:30, Granny took me to see her Doctor. This doctor was ok, I guess. I just didn’t like it when she put the Popsicle stick down my throat. Granny said it wasn’t her regular doctor. The doctor said that I probably had strep throat and that I need amoxicillin. Dad came up to get me and I went home. Mom and Dad are being super super nice to me again. They let me watch the whole of Shrek 1. I yelled at the dragon, “NOOO Dragon!” I vegged on the couch. Mom slept with me, which I liked but was not used to. I got mad at her for using my pillow and touching my blankets. But, I told her “you’re not going back to your bed, Ok?” I tried to scare the dragon away and told Mom that it was ok, she didn’t need to be scared. I held her hand almost all night long. I woke up every 45 minutes and I was so thirsty all night. Somewhere in the middle of the night or wee hours of the morning I opened my eyes and saw my Mommy. She was lying next to me and she looked so beautiful and I just smiled at her and sighed. Then, suddenly, I saw bunny. What a great opportunity! I grabbed him and started hopping him up and down on Mom’s chest all the while chanting – “hop! hop! hop! hop!”

Friday, June 1
This morning I heard Mom telling Dad that I was a bit wacky in my sleep. I don’t know what she’s talking about. Today, I feel so very tired. I can hardly keep my eyes open. I stayed on the couch with my eyes half closed, falling in and out of sleep until 3:30. Then, I got enough energy to request my Bowmore container full of cars and played for a bit. I even ate some spaghetti and meatballs. Then I went to bed and slept well.

Saturday, June 2
I’m still tired but I feel a bit better. Dad had to go up Island to scrape and repaint the bottom of Grandpa’s boat so we drove him to the Mill Bay Ferry. Then, Mom took me to Island View Beach, where I played until I could dig no more. Today, I just don’t have the scooping stamina that I usually do. I fell asleep in the car at 11:30am. I went straight to bed when we got home and slept until 3pm. Mom had an appointment downtown and when I woke up Aunti Naomi was there. This perked me up immensely. We chatted, got caught up and I played. Then Mom came home and took me to Toys R’ Us where I got to pick out a new Pixar Cars Car. I chose Sally and Mom chose Wingo. We then went to the Video store where I picked out a new DVD. I get to keep it for a week. It’s called Tractor Tom and I love it. We went to Thrifty Foods after that and I started to get tired again. As we traveled up and down the aisles, I said “I want to go back to the car now, Ok?” Mom didn’t sleep with me tonight, but I called out to her over and over and over again.

Sunday, June 3
Mom and I are both exhausted from a very long night. I feel awful this morning. I still don’t want to eat and my whole body hurts. Mom says we are going to go up to Shawnigan Lake to visit Jiya, but I’m not in the mood. She said that we have to drop something off and that we won’t stay long. I perked up a bit at Jiya’s house because she has a really cool wooden kitchen. Mom was right, though, we didn’t stay long. Then, we got back in the car and I fell asleep on the way to Cowichan Bay. I woke up when Mom was taking me out of the car and transferring me to my buggy. I saw Granny and Grandpa and Uncle Malcolm and my cousin Connor. I also saw my Aunti Diane. She took one look and me and told my Mom that kids with strep are not this sick and that she better take me to the hospital to get checked out. This was the turning point in my day. While I did get to sleep for the ride back down the Malahat, Mom rudely awakened me when we got to our destination. I took one look at the building. It was the same one that Grandpa had to stay at. And, the same building that Aunti Kim was in when Sophie Lophie was born. I told her immediately, “I don’t want to go to the doctor.”

I tried to fight, but Moms are strong. She took off my clothes and put me in a striped prison gown. I had to wear a scratchy bracelet. Mom kept making a big deal out of the fact that there was a Bob-the-Builder sticker on it. I don’t even know who Bob the Builder is. Hello Mom! I only know about the kid’s shows that you actually tune me into. I cried and told her that the bracelet didn’t fit.

For the next six and a half hours, they poked and prodded me. I was still feeling so tired and it was my naptime. I couldn’t sleep very well, though, because I was hot again and it wasn’t my bed. Granny came with us because Dad was still working on Grandpa’s boat. Mom and Granny gave me ice chips. I Kept telling Mom that I wanted to put my jammies on and that I wanted my car shoes. But, she just kept telling me that soon we would be able to go. There were lots of people who came to ask Mom questions. After some time, Dad came and Granny said goodbye. Then, the vampire woman came and stole some of my blood and Dad couldn’t watch. She sucked it into a vile and took it away. I wondered where Granny went. I wanted to go too.
I heard Mom tell Dad that we arrived at 2pm. It was now 5pm. A man came along and said his name was Ted and that he was here to take us to my chest x-ray. Mom picked me up and started walking down the hallway. She wasn’t going towards the car, though. I told her she was going the wrong way. Ted took us to a room with a small chair on a high pedestal. Mom said that I was going to get my picture taken and that I didn’t even have to smile. I don’t know what she was so animated about. She didn’t have to sit in front of the scary machine. Can I go back to the waiting area and look at the Finding Nemo poster again?
The last part of my ordeal involved a urine (that’s pee for those not up on doctor lingo) sample. I could tell Dad was nervous about it because of the way he looked at the nurse when she approached with the baggy. I don’t want to get into the details because I respect my own privacy. Suffice it to say I was humiliated and there was an awful lot of very sticky medical tape in places where there shouldn’t be. I told Mom and Dad that I had to go to the toilet. I know that to sit on the potty I have to be in my nudie. But, they wouldn’t take that utterly uncomfortable baggy off. And, so I refused to pee.
I perked up a bit around 7pm and Mom started feeding me snacks out of her seemingly bottomless shoulder bag. At about 8pm, the Pediatrician came by and gave us the low down on my tests. I did not, as Mom & Aunti Diane suspected, have Strep Throat. Rather, my white blood count was low which means that my immune system has been working on overdrive trying to kill the wee little viral beasties that had invaded my body earlier in the week. Yes, that’s right I just have a virus. But, don’t be fooled it is a nasty one.
I talked about apple sauce and bunny pasta all the way home. I was hungry. But, by the time I climbed the stairs and could see the door to my room I had changed my mind. When Mom asked me if I wanted Bunny Pasta I had to give it to her straight. “No thank-you, I’m tired. I go to bed now.”
Mom changed my diaper before bed. It was half full of pee.

On Monday Mom stayed home from work. I woke up and for the first time in days, I asked for some milk. On Tuesday, Granny came down to play with me. She and I drove Grandpa to his physio appointment at the hospital. I was so glad that I didn’t have to see the doctor that I celebrated with a timbit. I’ve never had one before and have made a mental note to talk to Mom about what she has been keeping from me. I stayed overnight at Granny’s on Tuesday night and last night. Tonight, I drove home with Dad. Granny told Mom that I’ve been running circles around she and Grandpa and that I’m ready to go back to School. I couldn’t agree more.

As my good friend Will would say. Peace Out Friends. I’m A O’ Kay.hospital1hospital2
